If you do not repent, you will all perish

Say what!  How dare you to threaten me with that! Well, it’s not Father Carlos who says “if you don’t repent, you shall perish.” Who says it, then? Jesus Christ! The formula is very easy: if we do evil, things will go bad. Somehow it is a self inflicted punishment, as the bad things we do are necessarily followed by other bad things. But then, when bad things happen to others, we tend to say that those other people are worse than us. Jesus responds to that attitude: “those eighteen people who were killed when the tower at Siloam fell on them— do you think they were guiltier than everyone else who lived in Jerusalem? By no means! But I tell you, if you do not repent, you will all perish as they did!”  Of course we all have many good things, more than we deserve. And some people have too many sufferings in life, probably deserving a bit more. But the truth of the matter is that the most important things for us is that we need to be remorseful and repent, because if we don’t repent, we will all suffer the eternal damnation of hell. That’s the plain truth.

The second part of the Gospel talks about judgment. The parable says, “It may bear fruit in the future. If not you can cut it down.’” The ones who are cut down from the tree are those who are doomed in hell. But those aren’t going to eternal damnation unless they go through the judgment of God and turned out to be in mortal sin at the moment of their judgment. Now, bearing fruit means living in the grace of God. That’s the fruit God wants us to produce: that we live in the His grace and have that grace lead us into works of love to one another. Amor Christi nos urget: the love of God somehow pushes us into doing good deeds. That’s being fruitful. The grace of God should lead us into feeding the hungry, visiting and caring for the sick, the homeless, the afflicted, doing peaceful works through procuring justice, praying for the wellbeing of others. If our life is not in that zone of productivity we are not being fruitful and we will be cut down from the tree of life. By this it’s meant that those who are to be cut down from the tree are those who won’t make it into heaven. 

But there is hope! God has given us a precious opportunity of repenting, begging forgiveness to Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. If we repent wholeheartedly, it doesn’t matter how ugly our sins, God will forgive us, and if we are found in the grace of God when we die, we will make it into the Kingdom of Heaven. So, there is hope, while we are alive there is hope that we can eventually repent. But let’s not postpone our repentance because today could be our last day, our last opportunity to convert our life into a life of grace. Let’s take advantage of God’s patience.

 

Si no se arrepienten, todos morirán

¡Qué dice! ¡Cómo se atreve a amenazar con eso!  Bueno, no es Padre Carlos el que dice “si no se arrepienten todos morirán.” ¿Quién lo dice, pues? ¡Jesucristo! Jesus Christ! La formula es bien sencilla: si hacemos el mal, cosas malas van a pasar.  De alguna manera es un castigo autoinfligido, ya que las obras malas que hacemos necesariamente serán seguidas por otras cosas malas. Pero entonces, cuando a otras personas les pasa algo malo tendemos a decir que ellos son peores que nosotros. Jesús responde a esa actitud: “los dieciocho que murieron cuando la torre de Siloé les cayó encima, ¿ustedes creen que ellos son más culpables que los demás que vivieron en Jerusalén? ¡De ninguna manera! ¡Yo les digo que si ustedes no se arrepienten, ustedes morirán como ellos!” ¡Claro que tenemos muchas cosas buenas, más de las que merecemos!  Y alguna gente tiene demasiados sufrimientos, y probablemente merezcan un poco más. Pero la verdad del caso es que lo más importante para nosotros es que necesitamos el remordimiento y arrepentirnos, porque si no nos arrepentimos, sufriremos la condenación eternal en el infierno. Esta es la pura verdad. 

La segunda parte del Evangelio habla del juicio.  La parábola dice, “a lo mejor da fruto en el futuro. Pero si no, puedes cortarla.” Los que son cortados del árbol son los que irán al infierno.  Pero no irían al infierno a menos que Dios los haya juzgado y resultara que fueron hayados en pecado mortal en el momento de su juicio. Ahora bien, dar fruto significa vivir en la gracia de Dios. Ese es el fruto que Dios quiere que produzcamos: que vivamos en Su gracia y que hagamos que esa gracia produzca obras de amor para los demás. Amor Christi nos urget: el amor de Dios de alguna forma nos empuja a hacer buenas obras.  Eso es ser fructífero. La gracia de Dios nos lleva a dar de comer al hambriento, visitar y cuidar al enfermo, al deambulante, al afligido, a hacer obras de paz procurando la justicia, orando por el bien de los demás. Si nuestra vida no está en esta zona de productividad no estamos siendo fructuosos y seremos cortados del árbol de la vida. Con esto se quiere decir que los que serán cortados del árbol son los que no llegarán al cielo. 

¡Pero hay esperanza! Dios nos ha dado una preciosa oportunidad de arrepentirnos, implorando el perdón de Nuestro Señor y Salvador Jesucristo. Si nos arrepentimos de todo corazón, no important lo feo que hayamos pecado, Dios nos perdonará, y si somos hayados en a gracia de Dios a la hora de nuestra muerte, llegaremos al cielo. Así que hay esperanza, mientras estemos vivos hay esperanza de que eventualmente nos podamos arrepentir. Pero no dejemos para más tarde el arrepentimiento pues hoy puede ser nuestro ultimo día, nuestra última oportunidad de convertirnos a la vida de la gracia. Aprovechemos la paciencia de Di
